This is a must read and an eye-opener for all of us, free women, who sometimes forget to count our blessings. She was born in England but lives in California now.
Had I made that same mistake of thinking that arranged marriages and forced marriages were the same thing? The book would have been no remarkable literary achievement in itself, had it not been a truthful and representative depiction of a shocking reality most of us are not even aware of. This book, however, is an uplifting story of staying true to one’s self, of overcoming hatred and adversity to do what you feel is the right thing, and of learning to forgive.
Then about the author. Well done, you should be very proud of your achievements.
I hope she is OK. These people are happy with the arrangement and they are in marriages that they want to be in. It is important to stress that forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both ‘partners’ do not wish to enter into marriage with the other person, and pressure, punishment, emotional or physical abuse, is used to xhame the two to marry.

After hearing her speak about her life and experiences, I just felt I had to read it. But for some women, and even for some men, this is a harsh reality and it needs to be talked about. I figured I understood their cultures rather well: This is an intimate snapshot of life for some Asian women in Britain. SHAME is an inspiring book, not least because of its honesty. I would have walked away from that hell and never looked back. Lots to say about this book but not finding words to formulate.

Jasvinder’s story is so unbelievable to me, This sanghefa really interests me, most recently because I met a friend of mine at work who is Indian. My 2 star rating is borne out of frustration with the poor quality of writing, not the content. This story is on that will stay with me.
